DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Health-Care Savings Under Obamacare
Washington, DC – Following a release by the Department of Health and Human Services that revealed the rates for health insurance coverage through state marketplaces, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement:
“The data released this morning by HHS confirms what Democrats have been promising for years: The Affordable Care Act will deliver quality, affordable health coverage through the state marketplace. In my congressional district in Miami, a 27-year-old who makes $25,000 per year can purchase coverage through the exchange for $72 per month, on average, when factoring in the value of tax credits. Using the same standard, a family of four with an annual income of $50,000 can enjoy ‘silver’ coverage for an average of $282 per month. Nationally, the premiums found in the report will be lower than projections for 95 percent of Americans.
“These premiums erase all doubt that Democrats’ hard-fought campaign for reform has produced real savings for health-care consumers. At the same time, it completely discredits the misleading, hysterical campaign waged by Republicans, who are willing to risk the health of our nation’s economy by shutting down the government or, worse, defaulting on our obligations just to defund Obamacare. The GOP knows that the only way Obamacare could fail is if they succeed in discouraging Americans from taking advantage of the savings available through the Health Care Marketplace. But the people of this country recognize a good deal when they see one.
“When I began my career in politics, one of my primary goals was to assist in achieving health-care coverage for all Americans. So on a personal level, this is a very proud day for me. It’s a triumphant moment for the Democratic Party. And most important of all, it’s a victory for the American people.”
