April Update from the KDP
We’d like to offer a sincere “Thank You” to all the Kentucky Democrats who turned out last Saturday to take part in their Precinct Elections. As you know, the Precinct Elections are the first step in the Party’s reorganization process and Saturday was a great success. We had a lot of great Kentucky Democrats turnout in every part of the state and it looks like the reorganization of the Kentucky Democratic Party is off to a great start.
County and Legislative District Conventions
The next big step in our reorganization process is now less than two weeks away! The Democratic County Conventions will be held April 14th across the Commonwealth. At these Conventions, not only will we continue the reorganization by selecting members for County Executive Committee and county delegates for the State Convention and Congressional District Conventions, we’ll begin the exciting process of choosing Delegates for the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. At the County Conventions, we’ll elect folks from each county to go to Louisville, June 2nd and elect Delegates for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Remember, the process of electing folks to choose our DNC Delegates is open to every registered Democrat so I hope you take advantage of it.
Also, just as a reminder, Democrats in Fayette and Jefferson Counties, please contact your local party to make sure to find out when your Legislative District Conventions will be held.
The KDP’s new organization, Capital Democrats, is off to a great start. Our kick-off meeting with Gov. Beshear and Lt. Gov. Abramson was a big success and since then we’ve hosted two Happy Hours in Frankfort that have given folks a great chance to get to know their fellow Democrats a little better. Our next big event is right around the corner and is sure to be a fun one. There will be a Bourbon Tasting, April 16th at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort, brought to you and sponsored by the Kentucky Distillers Association. We’ll send out more information on this soon but make sure to mark your calendars.
A Big “Thank You” to Our Interns
The KDP has been lucky to have some great interns over the past several months who have helped us with the reorganization process and gear up for the political season. Below, please find a little bit about these great folks.
Rebekah Patten – Rebekah is a junior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Sociology at UK and has been invaluable helping with the party’s reorganization process. After graduation, she plans on continuing her education in Law School and is already preparing as a member of the UK Mock Trial Team.
Zac Ogle – Zac originally from Hancock, Ky, is attending his final year at the University of Kentucky. He will graduate this May with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Economics where he’a a member of Delta Sigma Phi. Zac’s been especially helpful with the party’s fundraising activities.
If you know anyone interested in becoming an intern with the KDP, please forward their information to the KDP’s Political and Finance Director Jared Smith at email@example.com.
Tax Check Off
Tax Day is just around the corner and I would like to encourage you one last time to make sure and participate in the Kentucky Political Party Tax Check Off. We’ve been working hard to make sure that every Democrat knows that, by checking the “Democratic” box on you Kentucky tax forms, $2 will be allocated towards the Democratic Party - $1.50 to the KDP and 50 cents to your local party. Remember, this won’t increase your tax bill or decrease your refund and it’s the easiest way to support your party.
Save the Date
The night before our Democratic State Convention, I hope you’ll join us in Louisville for the 2012 Kentucky Democratic Party Wendell Ford Dinner. This year we’re holding a joint dinner with the Jefferson County Democratic Party but, as always, we expect a great time as Democrats from all of the Commonwealth gather for a great evening. We’ll be sending more information on the dinner out shortly but hope you’ll be able to attend.
