The President’s Safeguards Help Prevent Future Oil Spills; Romney Shills for Big Oil

While President Obama is safely and responsibly increasing domestic oil production and helping families save at the pump, Mitt Romney and his Big Oil allies continue to attack his plan, fighting to keep their tax breaks and block alternative fuels.

Today Mitt Romney is campaigning in Virginia, once again attacking the President and distorting his energy record. While President Obama is helping families save at the pump with his all-of-the-above energy strategy, Mitt Romney and his Big Oil allies continue to attack his plan, fighting to keep their tax breaks and block alternative fuels.

President Obama took action this year to assess the oil, gas and renewable energy resource potential in the Mid- and South Atlantic, including off the coast of Virginia.
This will help inform future decisions about whether, and if so where, leasing for safe and responsible oil and gas drilling would be appropriate in these areas.
Offshore drilling in Virginia will affect Virginia’s tourism and fishing industries, as well as the Defense Department’s operations in the state. President Obama knows it’s a decision that can’t be taken lightly.

But Mitt Romney would ignore these pressing concerns to appease his Big Oil donors, potentially putting the natural resources and tourism industry of Virginia’s beaches at risk. His energy policy is full of empty rhetoric and bad ideas that would make his Big Oil donors even richer at the expense of the middle class. Romney has:

  • Raised nearly $900,000 from oil and gas special interests in this election alone.
  • No plan to stop giving $4 billion a year in taxpayer dollars to oil and gas companies that are making record profits.
  • Criticized the fuel economy standards that are helping families save at the pump.
  • Promised to repeal Wall Street reforms that will prevent corporations from manipulating the energy market to profit off of high prices at the pump.

Contrary to Romney’s disingenuous attacks, President Obama continues to make America more energy independent. He’s reducing our dependence on foreign oil, helping families save at the pump and creating an economy built to last by out-innovating and out-building our competitors around the world.

Oil and gas development has increased every year of the Obama administration and domestic oil production is now at an eight-year high – and our dependence on foreign oil is now at a 16-year low. Last year, we cut net oil and petroleum imports by 1 million barrels a day. President Obama also:

  • Is helping expand domestic oil production by offering millions of acres of land for development and improving safety measures to prevent future spills.
  • Has taken important steps forward in allowing safe exploration in the Arctic Seas, which could yield an estimated 23 billion barrels of oil.
  • Is promoting the safe, responsible development of America’s near 100-year supply of natural gas that could help support more than 600,000 jobs. Under President Obama, we regained our position as the world’s leading natural gas producer, and last year domestic production reached an all-time high.
